Country: French Polynesia – Archipelago : Tuamotu Islands – Main Base :Tikehau and Rangiroa

Our destination is a couple of atolls well known by scubadivers and located in the Tuamotu Archipelago. The first island, Tikehau, is a little piece of paradise located 300 km away in the northwest of Tahiti. With an almost circular lagoon and only one pass, the famous explorer Jacques-Yves COUSTEAU declared Tikehau the richest atoll on the face of the earth.

The second island we will explore, Rangiroa, is the largest atoll in French Polynesia and the second one in the world : it could contain in its center the whole island of Tahiti. Rangiroa is a natural aquarium, ranked by Jacques Cousteau as the most impressive diving site in the world. The Tiputa Pass and the Avatoru Pass are mythical diving spots, world-renowned for dolphins, reef sharks and manta rays.

The aquatic treasures of these two islands won’t be found only in their famous passes but also by discovering the shark nurseries and the manta ray cleaning stations inside the lagoon as well as the outer reef slope and the open ocean around.

tiger shark megafauna snorkeling expeditions

A lot of sharks:  During the Megafauna expedition, we aim at making you live close encounters with blacktip, gray reef, silvertip, whitetip sharks as well as the majestuous tiger sharks. We work with a team of professionnals to make these encounters safe and educative. Blackfin, lemon, hammerhead or nurse sharks can also be met during our drift snorkeling. The shark nurseries located in the flats of Rangiroa and Tikehau are also a must to do.

Bottlenose dolphins: The Tiputa Pass in Rangiroa is well known for its resident population of bottlenose dolphins. There, in the strong currents of the pass, they often visit scubadivers and swimmers and play around them. Swimming with the dolphins of Rangiroa is an experience you won’t forget.

Manta Rays: Swimming with manta rays will be possible in the cleaning station of Tikehau as well as in the pass and coral reefs of Rangiroa. With some luck, spotted eagle rays and pink whiprays will be also part of your adventure.

Pelagic species: Exploring the open ocean around the Tuamotu always means a lot of surprises. Encounters with sailfish, baitballs, marine mammals or pelagic sharks could happen !

Coral reefs and tropical fish: Even if the main goal of the expedition will be to meet big marine species, the underwater landscapes around us will be hard to ignore ! You will explore amazing and colorful coral reefs hosting plenty of tropical fish: barracudas, groupers, jackfish, napoleonfish, unicornfish and so much more.

ADVANCED : A medium to strong snorkeling/ freediving/scubadiving experience is required. To join this expedition, you need to be in good shape, to be very easy in the water, to not be scared by the deep blue and big marine species. We also recommend our guests to be able to freedive below 5 meters deep.

We ask every guest to have an international diving insurance and to inform us of any present or past health issue that may represent a risk during the expedition.

Weather: In French Polynesia, the climate is tropical – warm and humid. In the Tuamotu, the sun is strong and the heat makes precautions necessary: sunscreen, hats and regular hydration.

Navigation : The islands are wide and large. By consequence, the navigation times can be long sometimes (up to 2 hours). We provide an unique adventure expedition but you need to be in your element on a boat.

Language: In the Tuamotu, locals speak tahitian and french. During the expedition, you will always have at least one english-speaking guide with you.
